
Theย Vjosaย (Albanian:ย [หvjษsa]; indefinite form:ย Vjosรซ) orย Aoรถsย (Greek:ย ฮฯฮฟฯ) is a river in northwestern Greece and southwestern Albania. Its total length is about 272 kilometres (169ย mi),[1]ย of which the first 80 kilometres (50ย mi) are in Greece, and the remaining 192 kilometres (119ย mi) in Albania. Its drainage basin is 6,706ย km2ย (2,589ย sqย mi) and its average discharge is 195ย m3/s (6,900ย cuย ft/s).ย The main tributaries areย Voidomatis,ย Sarantaporos,ย Drinoย andย Shushicรซ.

Aoรถsย (แผฯฮฟฯ, แผแฟถฮฟฯ, แผแฟทฮฟฯ) inย Greekย (e.g. in Eratosthenes’ Geography), andย Aousย inย Latin. In Albanian it is calledย Vjosรซย orย Vjosa, while in Greece it is known by its ancient name (ฮฯฮฟฯ in modern orthography), in medieval Latin maps was calledย Viossaย as well asย Vovousaย (ฮฮฟฮฒฮฟฯฯฮฑ) orย Aiasย (ฮฮฏฮฑฯ, ฮแผดฮฑฯ).ย In Greek it is also known as ฮฮฟฯฮฟฯฯฮฑ (Voioussa, pronounced vo-i-usa), especially in pre-20th century texts.ย According to historian Ap. Vakalopoulos (1977) the name Voioussa is the common Greek name of Aoos.[11]

Vjosa is also a common female Albanian given name.


The river arises in the Pindus mountains of Epirus, Greece, and generally flows northwest. It enters Albania near รarshovรซ, and empties into the Adriatic Sea just north of Vlorรซ. Generally wild and unpolluted, the river is surrounded by the VikosโAoรถs National Park in Greece, and the Vjosa-Narta Protected Landscape near its mouth
