THIS Took A Lot of Water

“Data Center Alley” in Northern Virginia, particularly in Loudoun County, is home to nearly 200 data centers operated by major tech companies like Amazon, Google, and Microsoft. These facilities rely heavily on the Potomac River for cooling, accessed through municipal water networks.

Between 2019 and 2023, water consumption in the region surged from 1.13 billion to at least 1.85 billion gallons, raising environmental concerns, especially during droughts affecting the Potomac watershed.

As a major hub for AI processing, “Data Center Alley” powers applications like ChatGPT and video/image generation tools. While exact AI processing figures aren’t disclosed, training large models requires thousands of high-performance GPUs or specialized accelerators. This leads to significant energy demands—one ChatGPT query can consume nearly 10 times the energy of a standard Google search.
